Originally, the ENGLISH THROUGH CITIZENSHIP Package consisted of "sheltered social studies," citizenship, and "Americana" content at three levels of reading difficulty: Literacy, Beginning, and Intermediate. The two Intermediate-Level Student Texts were converted to one volume, entitled A JOURNEY THROUGH AMERICA. (An abbreviated version of the book was published under the title About the U.S.A, by the Office of English Language Programs, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State, Washington DC 20547.)
A JOURNEY THROUGH AMERICA offers an easily-comprehensible overview of topics covered in sheltered social studies and citizenship courses: Symbols and Holidays; Famous Americans; U.S. Geography; Citizenship; the U.S. Constitution; Federal, State, and Local Government; and U.S. History. Suited to both home study and classroom use, the 36 four-page modules (5th-grade reading level) were designed for new readers, developmental students, and second-language speakers who learn best through doing; the various activity types lend themselves to individualized as well as cooperative learning.
The JOURNEY THROUGH AMERICA Student Text can be used independently or as a companion to English Through Citizenship: THE GAME. There is also an Instructor's Manual.
