Homophones—words with the same pronunciation but different spellings and meanings—cause no end of difficulty for English language learners, even native speakers--especially when they hear, read, or try to write them!  One purpose of these innovative two-sided word-and-picture homophone card decks is to help clear up the confusion. 

The Card Faces display the words themselves. Because the Card Backs show illustrations and definitions, card-users learn to associate  word spellings with their meanings. Useful as flash cards or matching items—and for language-game play, the materials provide and reinforce instruction in spelling, pronunciation, phonics, and vocabulary (word explanations and usage in context). The 15 homophone pairs of each Intermediate Deck 7-11 are all one-syllable words, less frequent and more sophisticated in meaning and spelling than the items of the Beginning Level. They include grammatical endings, silent consonants, and other "difficult" features.

Accompanying the Intermediate Decks is a 44-page reproducible teacher-resource Activity & Idea Book.  It explains why homophones exist in English, how to teach or learn them, how to play cooperative or competitive games with two-sided cards, and how to make productive use the materials in large classes, learning groups, and for independent study.
