Grammar SCENARIO: English Grammar in Context 1 = 228-Page Student Text

This original SCENARIO 1 was created in the 1980s in an attempt to make academic English-as-a-Second-Language courses (based, first of all, on grammar, sentence patterns and structures, and rules) more interesting, engaging, and effective for both instructors and students.  Instead of dry, tedious explanations followed by rote exercises with "correct answers," text-users were offered amusing or practical, illustrated comic strips, skits, or stories to enjoy; these included copious examples of the targeted grammar to recognize, understand, and repeat.  After simple boxed explanations came controlled, but still contextualized, exercises that illustrated the relevant patterns and rules.  More importantly, in the "Talking It Over" and "Writing It Down" Sections, students got to demonstrate that they grasped the grammar in real-life, communicative, expressive ways.  Engaging activities and games were included from the very start.

The Table of Contents of SCENARIO 1  lists 16 "Grammar Topics."  Its "Scenarios" and grammar instruction focus on The Verb BE, Questions & Answers, "THERE IS/ARE, Imperative Sentences, The Present Continuous, The Simple Present, Sentence Word Order, Kinds of Nouns, A/AN Vs. THE, The Simple Past, Simple Modals, The Future,  and a few more useful subjects of study.  These are presented and practiced in contexts that include "The Show," "Curiosity," "The Hungry Man," "Homesickness," "Housework," "The Job Interview," "Holiday Customs," "Gossip," and the like.  There are four Summary & Review Units.

Though long "out of print," this old SCENARIO 1 can be ordered as a new, fresh "RePrint on Demand" basis, which we can reproduce. Or you can download the text to print it locally, or use it in other forms that suit your purposes.

(The original Grammar SCENARIO: English Grammar in Context 2  [ISBN 0-03-063222-6] follows the same philosophy and has the same format as the old SCENARIO 1, but it is directed at Intermediate-Level students.  In addition to reviewing and reinforcing the grammatical structures of Book 1 at a more "sophisticated" level, it offers Units that focus on "Possessive Forms," "Pronouns," "Direct & Indirect Objects," "Comparison," "The Filler IT," "The Present Perfect," and "Perfect Modals."  Some of its "Scenario" titles are "The Generation Gap," "Work in the Future," "The Good Old Days," "World Events," "The Shopping Center," and many more.)

(The third, highest-level book of the series, Grammar SCENARIO: English Grammar in Context 3  [ISBN 0-03-063223-4] is directed at advanced or advancing students.  With titles like The Simple Tenses: Present, Past, & Future, Modal Verbs & Clauses, Noun Markers & Pronouns, Adjectives: Words, Phrases, & Clauses, and The Perfect Tenses, it combines and compares the patterns and rules of grammar subtopics. It also covers The Passive, Infinitives, and Gerunds & Verb Complements.  Its "Scenarios" include "The Interview," "An Immigration Story," "A Mystery," "The Stopwatch," "Geography," and so on.)

(Although its material is based on the old SCENARIO 1, the New SCENARIO BOOK ONE: Beginning to Use English Grammar in Context [ISBN 978-1-891077-93-7] was rewritten, reformatted, upgraded, edited, and thoroughly class-tested.  Because its 284 pages contained too much content to be presented and mastered in a semester-long community college Grammar/Writing course, it was divided into two texts: The 154-Page New SCENARIO BOOK ONE-A (Intro + Chapters 1-10) [ISBN 978-1891077-48-7] and the 152-page SCENARIO BOOK ONE-B (Chapters 11-20) [ISBN 978-1891077-49-4].  But even a "Half-Text" offered too much "language-skills instruction" to be "covered" in class time alone. Therefore, two extensive Answer Keys & Teacher's Guides were created: 182 page Key and Guide for BOOK ONE-A [ISBN 978-1-934637-35-7] and 154 page Key and Guide for BOOK ONE-B [ISBN 978-1-934637-36-4]. These shrink-wrapped pages not only aid teachers, tutors, helpers, and learners during class or small-group meetings but also make the material "self-teaching," ideal for doing homework or independent study.)
