At Advanced Levels of language proficiency, students of phonics and new readers need to recognize (read aloud) all regular spellings of vowel sounds in one-syllable words and in the stressed syllables of multi-syllable items. They should be able to distinguish among simple   simple ("short" or "lax") vowels--two of them before -r,  and 7 complex ("long" or "tense") vowels or diphthongs, including up to 6 variants before -r.   Both American dictionary and IPA (International Phonetic Symbols) may be helpful in this regard.  (These are displayed on Card Backs and Card Faces.)  Advancing learners can also confront "sight words" with exceptional vowel-letter combinations, comparing their pronunciation and spellings to those of "regular" items.  They can learn both common and interesting or amusing vocabulary items along with their parts of speech and uses in meaningful contexts.
