The 80 items of the Intermediate-Level Word-and-Picture Cards include both "closed syllables" in the CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) pattern and "open syllables" that end with vowel sounds. Each set of four one-syllable items contains one of 20 vowel sounds of American English: 8 distinct simple (also called "short" or "lax") vowels--two of them before -r,  and 7 complex (also called "long" or "tense") vowels, which include 4 variants before -r.  In addition to the most frequent vowel letters, the words contain starred * alternative but regular spellings and double starred ** unusual spellings.  As in the Packs of other levels of difficulty, the four items per set are a noun, a verb, an adjective, and a word of another part of speech, like a pronoun, an adverb, or perhaps even an interjection.   Therefore, in addition to learning regular and other phonics and spelling patterns, intermediate students practice using common vocabulary correctly and expressively in phrases and sentences.  These effective multi-purpose materials are designed not only to "lower the affective filter" of reading/spelling lessons but also to make progress in efficient yet fun ways.
