The 60 items of the Beginning-Level Word-and-Picture Cards are mostly in the CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) pattern.  Each set of four one-syllable words contains the same very frequent rime (rhyming word part) with identical vowel letters.  They "cover" the 15 most common "simple" and "complex" vowel sounds of the language. ("Short" vowel sounds before -r are included but not "long" vowels or diphthongs before -r.) 

One item of each set is a noun, the second is a verb, the third is an adjective, and the last is of another part of speech, such as a preposition or a conjunction.  Therefore, in addition to reinforcing basic phonics and spelling patterns, novice students start learning how to use common vocabulary in context (phrases and sentences).  These engaging multi-purpose materials and methods are designed to take the pain out of "academic" word-level language learning from the start.
