VERB FORMS (for Great Grammar), Basic & Beginning Levels = 54-Card & 72-Card Packs with Two Small-Format Activity & Idea Books
English-language learners may be used to seeing the forms (the Base or Simple Form, the Simple Past, and--at higher levels--the Past Participle) of irregular verbs on "Flash Cards." In addition to teaching/memorizing the pronunciation and spelling of these most common verbs, however, it makes sense to include instruction in their meanings and uses.
Half of the 54 two-sided Cards in the Basic Level of VERB FORMS display the Simple (Base) Forms of the 27 most frequent verbs in the language (be, come, do, eat, get, go, etc.); the other half show the corresponding Simple Past Forms on their faces (was/were, came, did, got, went, etc.). But what makes these Grammar-Vocabulary materials unique is their Card Backs: on the other side of the Base-Verb Cards are simple definitions of the word meanings, while the Simple-Past Card Backs display line-drawings that illustrate the verb meaning. This feature makes games in which Cards are matched from their Backs much less a matter of guesswork or memorization and much more cognitive. While competing in such a diversion, players start to "acquire" the kinds of words used in basic definitions; the cues offered by the pictures elicit phrases and sentences that use the verbs in context.
The 32-page small-format Activity & Idea Book that accompanies the Cards of each Level have an Intro, suggestions for use of the materials (including preparation and follow-up) , instructions for six Classic Card Games that offer motivating competition in addition to educational content, and a Reference List. The 36 verbs presented and practiced in the 72-Card Pack of Beginning-Level VERB FORMS are not as basic as those in the previous pack; they are, however, very commonly used in English. The format of the Cards and the Book are the same.
ISBN 987-1-891077-35-7 & -36-4 $12.00
(The Intermediate- and Advanced-Level VERB FORMS Card Packs [ISBNs 978-1-891077-37-1 & 38-8] contain more regular and irregular verb forms than the Basic- and Beginning-Level Packs. Their verb-vocabulary is less frequent in the language and, therefore, "more challenging" than the very common words of the preceding Levels. Also, the higher-level materials contain three Cards for each verb instead of two: a Base-Verb Form, the Simple Past, and the Past Participle. On the backs of the Participle Verb Cards are phrases that illustrate that item's meaning.)
(The Activity & Idea Books for all levels of VERB FORMS are scheduled for revision and updating. There will be one, expanded 8.5 x 5.5 Book for each pair of products--both Basic & Beginning and Intermediate & Advanced. The Cards themselves will be improved as well.)
