At the Advanced Level of Phonics Bingo, there are 36 words per game—without pictures, to compare all the spellings of the relevant sounds, including starred * exceptions.  To focus on sound-letter correlations, the targeted spellings are underlined in the words.  The Sound/Spelling Chart under each grid displays dictionary and IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) symbols for sounds, followed by possible common, alternative, and unusual letter spellings that produce them.   

The associated Advanced-Level Activity & Idea Book is the most complete of all four, especially in regard to its efficient “phonics/spelling teacher-training course.” It includes information about simple vs. complex vowel sounds and spellings, vowel sounds before -r, voiced vs. voiceless consonants in initial, medial, and final word positions, the effects of syllables and syllable-stress in spelling and pronunciation, and so on.  There are useful, versatile, reference lists of relevant vocabulary and rhyming-word items.  At a more challenging level than previously, the book suggests procedures for "Educational Phonics Bingo," "Small-Group Bingo," Card-Less Bingo," "Do-It-Yourself Bingo," and other productive game variations. Ideas for review and reinforcement activities make use of rhyming-word and homophone groupings, information-gap "spelling tests," and phonics-based "spelling bees." And finally, reproducible Mastery Checks with answer keys not only assess learner progress and mastery of word-level content. They also provide opportunity for even more creative, effective beyond-the-product pedagogy.
