Homophone pairs and groups are much more plentiful in English than in other languages, and many frequently used words have homophones. Even at advancing levels of language acquisition, words with different meanings that are pronounced alike but spelled differently can cause confusion. One purpose of these creative two-sided word-and-picture homophone card decks is to help answer learner questions. Another is to provide practice in the pronunciation, spelling, phonics, and uses of these interesting word pairs and groups.   

The card faces display the words themselves. Because the card backs show contexts (phrases with blanks) and definitions, card users learn to associate  word spellings with their meanings. Useful as flash cards or matching items—and for language-game play, the materials provide and reinforce systematic vocabulary instruction. The 28 homophone pairs of each Advanced Deck 12-15 are one- and multi-syllable words taken from a comprehensive ESL reference list.  Though they occur less frequently and are more sophisticated in meaning and orthography than items of the previous levels, they are nevertheless useful vocabulary items. They include prefixes and suffixes, exceptional vowel and consonant spellings, silent consonants, and other "difficult" features of the language.

Accompanying the Advanced Decks is a 32-page reproducible teacher-resource Activity & Idea Book.  It explains why homophones exist in English, how to teach or learn them, how to play cooperative or competitive games with two-sided cards, and how to make productive use the materials in large classes, learning groups, and for independent study.
